Canine Therapy Program Brings Joy and Healing to Patients

Lindsay Wansbury, MFTIn cooperation with the Mendocino Coast Humane Society, MCDH now offers hospital patients visits by Sunshine Team (owners and their friendly dogs).

“Science and plain old observation tell us that animals bring great joy and healing to humans. Besides bringing a smile, our happiness hormones actually respond to a dog with a wagging tail,” says Lindsay Wansbury, program coordinator. “The Sunshine Teams, we believe, can help fill a gap when a patient misses their own pet, can trigger stories of their pets and offer a happy distraction.”

If you have a dog that loves people, has a calm temperament, and has passed the Canine Good Citizen Test, call Lindsay at 964-8328 or email her at duneunit@hughes.net for more information.

Dog and Patient 1In addition to the hospital, Sunshine Teams are also regularly visiting the Lodge at the Woods.

Lindsay and her golden retriever, Stella, are ambassadors for the Eileen Hawthorne Fund “Education in the Schools” program teaching the importance of spaying or neutering animals and how to provide good pet care.
